Education and the Elections
Now that the elections are over and the Democrats have taken back control of both houses of Congress, what is it going to mean for education?
The Democratic leadership has already mentioned that one of the early priorities will be rolling back the interest rates on educational loans that Bush and the boys jacked up. Whether or not it will happen remains to be seen. The majorities are slim, and Bush still has veto power, so it will likely depend on whether a deal can be struck to give him something he wants more.
The Democrats will also have an interest in increasing educational grants. Pell Grants and others have remained stagnant through the Republican years while college costs have been going up by double digit percentages.
Now is a good time to let your Congressmen and women know that you expect them to do the right thing and make college more affordable to all.
