Indiana Senate Passes Student Loan Bill

While President Bush and his regime put the screws to student loan applicants, it's good to see some states trying to do the right thing.

The Indiana Senate has passed Senate Bill No. 230, which would permit the Indiana Secondary Market for Education Loans, Inc. to issue loans directly to students. This would eliminate the loan origination fee and would lower the interest rates on the student loans. The bill will be sent to the Indiana House.

Congratulations to Senators Lubbers and Simpson, as well as Representatives Behning, Micon and Welch for co-sponsoring this critical piece of legislation.

Student Loan Relief for Service Members

The Deficit Reduction Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, passed Wednesday by the House, and awaiting the President's signature, will allow student-loan payments and the accrual of any interest on such loans to be deferred for service members who were called to active duty due to the Iraq or Afghanistan conflicts. This includes National Guardsmen, Reservists called to active duty and regular members of the Armed Forces assigned to a duty station other than their normal assignment.

The bill allows for up to three years of deferment for military personnel mobilized in connection with a war or other military operation or national emergency.
