Connecticut Announces New Student Loan Program

Governor Rell announced a new partnership between Connecticut and it's credit unions that will provide student loans at a low rate of interest. As much as $17.5 million could be devoted to the program which will offer interest rates as low as 6% and 5.75%.

Those institutions offering loans at 6% per year will also be able to defer payment for one year, those offering at 5.75% will not have deferred payments.

Drink Milk? Get a Scholarship

This one is called a contest, but the winners (25 of them) will receive scholarships of $7,500 and a trip to the awards weekend in Orlando or another place to be named by the sponsors. The contest is called the SAMMY's (SCHOLAR ATHLETE MILK MUSTACHE OF THE YEAR) and one of the requirements is to write an essay of up to 250 words about "How Milk Has Helped In My Academics and/or Athletics".

Wal-Mart Sam Walton Community Scholarships - 2009

It's time for the Wal-Mart Sam Walton Community Scholarships again. The Wal-Mart Foundation is funding more than 2,500 scholarships of $3,000 for the 2009-10 school year. All high school seniors (including home schooled) maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA who are permanent residents of the United States may be eligible for the Sam Walton Scholarship.

Applications are online. Filing deadline for applications is January 31, 2009.

Wal-Mart has several other scholarship programs for associates and their dependents, including the Wal-Mart ASSOCIATE Scholarship, the Wal-Mart Higher REACH Scholarship and the WALTON Family Foundation Scholarship.

National Student Nurses' Association Scholarships

The Foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association provides over $100,000 in scholarships to nursing and pre-nursing students. The NSNA scholarships fall under two categories: the General Scholarship Program, which awards several different scholarships and the Promise of Nursing Regional Scholarship Program. A single application can be used to apply for both scholarships. Requirements and the application can be found at http://www.nsna.org/foundation/scholarships/undergrad.asp.

The General Scholarship Program includes several different awards, including Career Mobility Scholarships, Breakthrough to Nursing Scholarships, Specialty Nursing Scholarships, McKesson Scholarships and several more.

The scholarship application must be received by January 16, 2009. Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 and must be used for tuition, books, and academic fees.
